
Noguchi Shuzouten
In Fuchu City, Tokyo—once home to the provincial government of Musashi Province—Noguchi Shuzouten began its journey in 1860 (Manen 1).This was the closing chapter of the Edo period, a time of significant transformation as Japan transitioned to the Meiji era. It was the era when historical figures such as Katsu Kaishu, Yukichi Fukuzawa, and John Manjiro sailed to America aboard the Kanrin Maru, and the assassination of Tairo Naosuke Ii in the Sakuradamon Incident shook the nation.The Noguchi family, who served as Jinin (shrine officials) at Okunitama Shrine, the main shrine of Musashi Province, laid the foundation for the brewery. Under the name Nakaya, the first-generation Noguchi Kyubei began brewing sake, initially producing sacred offerings for the shrine.However, rapid urbanization during the late Showa era forced the brewery to pause its production at its original facility. Despite this, they have revived the tradition of crafting jizake—local sake from Fuchu, the heart of Musashi Province, and the greater Tokyo region.Enjoy these handcrafted sakes that harmoniously blend tradition and innovation.
